Hemp-derived vs Cannabis-derived THC

To understand exactly how delta-9 is legal across the US, you first have to understand one thing. Both hemp plants and cannabis plants produce delta-9 THC and nearly 400 other cannabinoids. Cannabis plants are those that produce higher concentrations of delta-9 THC, or the THC that brings on its infamous buzz. Hemp, on the other hand, is from the same plant family but produces higher concentrates of CBD versus THC.

Regardless of which plant the delta-9 THC is produced by, it offers the same effects, which, of course, will vary depending on strength or potency and from person to person. The only difference between hemp-derived THC products and cannabis-derived THC products is where they can be sold, which, again, will affect the strength or potency you can legally purchase.

The Legalities of Delta-9

As you probably know, the delta-9 THC you may be used to, that of the classic “weed”, has been and is being legalized for medical and recreational use across the US. Now, over 23 states have legal adult use or recreational delta-9 THC. So, how is it that delta-9 THC gummies are being sold online and in states even without this legalization?

It comes down to hemp-derived vs. cannabis-derived THC. While cannabis-derived THC is only legal in the states referenced above, due to the 2018 Farm Bill the cannabinoids produced by hemp plants (including up to 0.3% delta-9 THC) are legal federally. That means, as long as products are hemp-derived and adhere to the requirements set forth by the 2018 Farm Bill, they are available for purchase and consumption nationwide.

Delta-8 vs Delta-9 vs Delta-10

If you keep up with the hemp industry, it’s likely you’ve seen or heard of delta-8 or delta-10 gummies, oils, etc. Or you’ve likely even seen these products on the shelf at convenience or wellness stores. Delta-8 and delta-10 differ from the classic delta-9, so it’s crucial to understand their differences not just for personal effects but also for purchasing quality products.

The most important difference to grasp, first and foremost, is the fact that delta-9 is naturally produced by hemp and cannabis plants. Delta-8 and delta-10 are lab-created and only available as byproducts of the hemp extraction process. So, when purchasing farm-to-counter hemp-derived THC gummies or other products, you can rest assured you’re enjoying the natural healer from the plant itself, not from a lab that you may not be able to trust.

The next difference to understand is with regard to effects. Scientifically, delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10 all share the same chemical structure, but they have one double bond that differs. For delta-8, that double bond is on the 8th carbon chain; delta-9 has a double bond on the 9th carbon chain; and delta-10 has a double bond on the 10th carbon chain. These double bonds are responsible for the strength or potency of the psychoactive effects (or high) that each can produce by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system.

Delta-9 is the standard or baseline for psychoactive effects, which can range from mild to strong depending on the strength you consume. Unfortunately, and unlike delta-9, there has been little research conducted on delta-8 and delta-10 effects. However, from consumer reports, the industry has come to a consensus that delta-8, which is often called “weed-lite,” is less potent than delta-9 but more potent than delta-10.

Benefits of Delta-9

Before getting into the benefits of delta-9 THC, it’s important to note that effects can vary from person to person. In fact, factors like weight, metabolism, tolerance, and even what you ate that day can affect the effects you experience. With that said, the following is a list of ailments and conditions cited in a 2020 study that are most common amongst consumers using THC medically:

  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic Pain
  • Depression

While various States list the following ailments and conditions as being appropriate for medical use through their legalized programs:

  • Cancer and providing relief from cancer treatments
  • AIDS, and HIV
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Arthritis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Chronic Pain
  • And more

Delta-9 THC Tips for Beginners

The number one piece of advice you’ll hear on exploring delta-9 THC, whether hemp-derived or cannabis-derived, is start low low and go slow! By starting with a low dose (even half a gummy), you can personally gauge how the new compound affects you based on your unique physiology. The next piece of advice is to keep track of your progress as you go by keeping a journal or writing down your doses and how you felt from each.

This can help you fine-tune your sweet spot and keep track of how what you ate during the day, or the time of day you took it, may have affected hemp-derived delta-9 THC effects. Last but not least, always purchase your hemp-derived THC gummies from reputable companies that you can trust. Do your research by reviewing customer reviews, learning about the brand, and verifying that third-party lab testing is done on every batch.
